First Stage Qualifying Tournament

Arsenal winger Alex Scott was on top form as she fired in a hat-trick against the Faroe Islands on Sunday sending England Under-19s through to the next qualifying round for the 2003 European Championships.

Scott secured England maintained their 100 per cent record in this four-team mini tournament to see off the Faroe Islands 5-1.

England went into the game needing at least a draw after securing a 4-0 win over Lithuania and defeating tournament hosts Bulgaria 5-0. The Faroe Islands had four points going into the game, but found themselves 3-0 down within 15 minutes.

Tranmere Rovers striker Kim Holden scored the second and third as England made early possession count. But Rachelle Houldsworth, the Sheffield Wednesday 'keeper, let in her first goal of the campaign when she was beaten by a lob on 31 minutes.

Having going into the break 4-1 in the lead, England had to wait until the 91st minute to finish off the scoring and it was Scott who took the chance to earn her first hat-trick in international football.

England now face a second qualifying stage in mid-April as they try to progress to the 2003 European Championship Finals, which will be held in Germany in July. England reached the semi-finals of this year's competition, losing out to eventual winners Germany by a single penalty.
