Mo Marley has named the 18 players she hopes can fire England to the UEFA European Women’s U19 Championship Finals.
England will take on Finland, Wales and Austria in the Second Qualifying Round which is being staged in the Lincolnshire area next week; Scunthorpe United, Lincoln City and Grimsby Town will each host Marley’s young charges as they attempt to make it through to the last-eight stage in Turkey, but only the top-placed team in the group will advance to the Finals.
England’s impressive recent record in this competition (they lifted the Euro title in 2009 and were runners-up in both 2007 and 2010) meant they received a bye from the First Qualifying Round last October.
To make up for this potential lack of football Marley took her side to Holland in November for matches against the host nation and France and then to La Manga at the beginning of this month for a round-robin tournament involving Denmark, USA and Iceland. The Head Coach is now relishing a return to competitive action.
“I can’t wait to get going again,” said Marley.
“Looking at the five matches we have played so far this season, we have learned so many lessons, probably about the pace of the international game more than anything else.
“Those games also exposed us to different styles of play, different formations and the way different teams set up against us. I’m sure all those things will only help us next week because the importance of tournament football cannot be underestimated.
“The message I continually relay to these players is that they have got to be competing on a European and World stage and that getting tournament experience is crucial in their long-term development.
“We have done our research and we know we have got three tough games ahead of us. We will give each of the teams our utmost respect and hopefully we will have enough quality to top the group.”
