Lois Fidler’s England Women’s U17 team battled gamely with ten players to secure a 0-0 draw with Italy in the second match of their Elite Qualifying Round campaign.
Nikita Parris received a red card just before the half-hour mark, but England might have been a goal to the good by that stage had a seemingly clear penalty decision been given in their favour.
The host nation dominated the first half, but found it harder to create chances against Fidler’s depleted but resolute young side. Nevertheless, Mary Earps produced a number of fine saves after the restart to keep the scores level and England can be pleased with the result, especially under the circumstances.
Holland defeated Serbia in the day’s other game meaning England must beat the Dutch on Tuesday to qualify for the European Finals.
