The England Women’s U17 team slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Holland in the final match of their Elite Qualifying Round campaign, bringing to an end their hopes of European glory.
After beating Serbia 3-1 on Thursday and drawing 0-0 with Italy on Saturday, Lois Fidler’s side came into today’s fixture needing a victory to replace their opponents at the top of Group 1 and to subsequently book a place at the European Finals in Switzerland. Things were going exactly to plan when Katie Wilkinson gave England the lead in the 57th minute with her third goal in as many matches.
However, Dutch captain Kelly Zeeman equalised from the penalty spot just two minutes later and Sanne Schoenmakers scored the winner just three minutes from time.
As England will not participate in the summer's Euro Finals, this defeat also means they have failed to qualify for the next FIFA Women's U17 World Cup in Trinidad & Tobago.
