England drew 0-0 with Belgium in the final First Round Qualifier for the European Championship, but they are still in a strong position to progress to the Elite Round as one of the best runners-up.

Lois Fidler’s side, who beat Turkey 2-0 and Armenia 7-0 in the first two matches, dominated possession in the first half but only had a Meaghan Sargeant effort to show for their dominance.

Belgium seemed happy to soak up the pressure and hit the Three Lions on the counter attack but were decidedly better after the interval and created the better chances. However, neither side could break the deadlock and Belgium made it through to the final phase of qualifying for this season’s Euros, though England will be hopeful of joining them.

"All credit to the Belgians,” said Fidler after the game. “We let them back into it. They took the game to us in the second half and it was hold-your-breath time at the end. Belgium had the creativity that we lacked. We need to work on turning possession into goals.

"We've put into practice what we've done on the training pitch," she continued. "We've shown great attitude and commitment. The girls are absolutely gutted; it's tough when you haven't lost a game or let in a goal yet you still aren't sure of going through."
