England captain Faye White has urged her team-mates to finish the job off against Switzerland so that she can look forward to one last appearance on football’s biggest stage.
On Thursday, Hope Powell’s side will take on the Swiss in the second leg of their World Cup play-off, having earned a 2-0 lead in the first leg on Sunday.
And now White, who captained her country in the 2007 World Cup in China, wants to make this advantage count.
“They will no doubt come at us all guns blazing,” White said of Switzerland, “so we’ll have to be strong and make sure we do our jobs, which will hopefully take us into the World Cup.
“This is going to be my last chance so I want to relish every moment of it.
"World Cups are so special. It was unbelievable in China and you just want to make the most of every opportunity. You're a long time retired, so hopefully we'll put in the performance we need on Thursday and we'll all have something to look forward to."
White marshalled the Three Lions backline on Sunday as they avoided conceding an away goal and she now believes Switzerland’s need to score could well play into England’s hands.
“They are going to have to get goals and that should help us because it will open them up and we’ve got the players that can threaten them in behind and cause them problems,” she said. “And if they over-commit, we’ll have to make sure we’re clinical. We go there knowing we can score.
“We can take some confidence from the first leg and now it’s important that we prepare well and are fully recovered.”
