England Women’s Head Coach Hope Powell believes six points from their next two matches are vital if the Three Lions are to grab the guaranteed qualification place in Group 5 for next year’s FIFA World Cup.

England take on Austria at Loftus Road tomorrow evening and then face current Group leaders Spain at Millwall’s The Den on Thursday 1 April, and Hope knows that it is imperative that her squad maintain their current 100 per cent record.

“These are two difficult games and I just hope we can get the six points we need,” Powell told the Metro newspaper. “Only the top team goes through automatically so there is no room for error.”

England won their first two qualifying games against Malta and Turkey and currently sit in second place in the Group. Spain, who have already played four qualifiers, also have a 100 per cent record but Powell knows that it is England that other nations will be gunning for.

“We are confident but we are now the team to beat so that in itself brings more challenges,” she said.
