Hope Powell and Casey Stoney spoke of their delight at reaching Euro 2013.

A comfortable 3-0 win over Croatia at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium ensured England topped qualifying Group 6, clinching an automatic spot at next summer’s European Championship.

Powell said: “It was always going to be challenging. I think the games you are expected to win sometimes are the most difficult.

“We tried to execute the things we’d been doing all week in training and it paid off. We got three goals and three points which was the most important thing.

“Now we can look forward to Sweden next year and start doing the planning and the preparation for that.”

The captain echoed her National Coach’s sentiments, but admitted it’s time for the Three Lions to kick on in major tournaments.

Stoney said: “We know we can play better, we know we can score more goals, but I thought it was quite a convincing win in the end, so it was really good to qualify.

“The fact that we’ve qualified for the last five [tournaments] says it all.

“We’ve reached the quarter finals in three of them, a Final in our last Euros and we’re looking to better that. We need to go to major tournaments and start thinking about winning them.”

  • Great Stuff. Enjoyed watching the Croatia game. Pity that the BBC didn't have the result on text or the evening news, just Chelsea messing up after a 2 goal lead. MikeBy NorthEndMike (8 months ago)
