In 2011, Birmingham City captain Laura Bassett appeared four times for England, across three different competitions.

Her year began with appearances against Scotland (lost 2-0) and South Korea (won 2-0) in the annual Cyprus Cup and her solid defensive displays for the Blues ensured she was on the plane to Germany as part of England’s World Cup squad.

Capable of playing either at centre-back or as a holding midfielder, Bassett came off the bench, for Ellen White, in the final World Cup group game, the 2-0 victory over Japan.

Her final appearance of the year came in the opening UEFA Euro 2013 qualifier, against Serbia.
