Jess Clarke will look back fondly on 2011; it was the year she scored against the world’s No.1 ranked side and also netted in a World Cup.

Her year began in the Cyprus Cup with appearances against Italy, Scotland and South Korea, and then came her goal against the world's best team, USA, at Brisbane Road. Jill Scott played a cute through ball out to left for Clarke to run on to and she managed to push the ball to the touchline. Ellen White and American defender Rachel Buehler challenged for the loose ball, sending it looping into the air and Clarke volleyed it home from ten yards out.

After one more game, against Sweden in Oxford, Clarke boarded the plane to Germany where she helped England reach the last eight of the World Cup. She was on the bench for the opener against Mexico, but made amends in the next game by scoring the crucial winner against New Zealand in Dresden. Sarah Gregarious had put the ‘Football Ferns’ ahead, Scott equalised and Clarke came off the bench, for Rachel Yankey, to thump home England’s second with just nine minutes remaining.

Clarke also had a hand in England’s 2-0 victory over Japan, the eventual world champions.

Clarke has featured in the last three UEFA Euro 2013 qualifiers and scored in the last game, against Serbia.
