Eniola Aluko added six caps to her England tally in 2011, including appearances in all three World Cup group games.

The New Jersey Sky Blue forward kicked off her England year in the annual Cyprus Cup competition, starting up front in the 2-0 defeat to Scotland. She also started the 2-0 victory over South Korea in the same competition, but, by far her best performance of the year came against Sweden in May.

Aluko came off the bench at half-time, for Ellen White, and immediately made an impact, winning the corner from which Jill Scott scored the opening goal in the 46th minute. The 24-year-old proved a constant menace throughout the second period and almost crafted a second goal when she nutmegged Annica Svensson and crossed for Jess Clark, but the winger was put off by Linda Sembrant. Aluko later saw a firm shot saved by the legs of Swedish goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl.

Aluko’s performance against Sweden no doubt led to her inclusion in the starting eleven in England’s World Cup opener against Mexico, and she featured in the next two group matches, too; a 2-1 win over New Zealand and a 2-0 victory over eventual World Champions Japan.
