2011 was a landmark year for Anita Asante as the New Jersey Sky Blue midfielder made her 50th appearance for England during the World Cup.
The milestone came in the final group game against Japan, with Asante providing a defensive platform which allowed Hope Powell’s side to go on and record a deserved 2-0 victory over the eventual World Champions.
Asante’s international year began against Italy in the Cyprus Cup, the same game which saw Kelly Smith earn her 100th cap. She also started against Canada in the same competition.
The 26-year-old played the first half of the 2-0 win over Sweden, who were ranked fifth in the world at the time, and Asante’s final appearance of the year came as an 84th-minute substitute in the World Cup quarter final defeat to France.
