There were no excuses from Head Coach, Hope Powell, after England ended the Cyprus Cup’s group stage with a disappointing 2-2 draw against Switzerland.

Powell’s squad is below strength due to the unavailability of key players, but she said: “Even with the less recognised players we should still manage to win a game like this.

“Switzerland had a game plan and it was difficult to break through them, but we weren’t intelligent enough in the first half and there was some poor distribution.

“We played better in the second half, but we had chances to win the match and we weren’t clinical enough in front of goal.

“To be quite honest, it just wasn’t good enough. In the end we drew, but it felt like we lost and we’ve got to learn from it.”

Powell’s team has one remaining match in the tournament, but unlike last year it won’t be the final as they have finished third in their group.

After beating Canada to be crowned the 2009 Cup winners, it is likely to be one of the tournament’s lesser lights who will provide the opposition on Wednesday.

Powell said: “It’s disappointing not to have finished higher in the group, but the tournament has given us the chance to give all our players good game-time.

“Everybody in the squad has played some part and it’s good that some of our less recognised players have had the opportunity to experience tournament football.

“But it’s also shown that there are things that we clearly need to work on, certainly if we’re looking at the depth of the squad.”
