England striker Kelly Smith has been sending out a message to her opponents for Euro 2005 – beware!
The Watford-born forward is on fire in the W-League in the USA and home fans will be hoping she keeps her shooting boots on as England prepare to host next summer’s UEFA European Women’s Championship Finals.
A week ago Kelly registered a hat-trick as her team New Jersey Wildcats annihilated the South Jersey Banshees 9-0. That victory saw the Wildcats set a club record for most consecutive wins – five in their opening five league games.
Smith’s rival for the Golden Boot at Euro 2005, France star Marinette Pichon, set Kelly up for the opener – a left-footed shot from close range after just 11 seconds.
Smith connected with the sliding left-footed shot, giving the crowd of over 450 a play reminiscent of when she and Pichon teamed as one of the most dangerous duos in the WUSA as members of the Philadelphia Charge.
Smith scored again with less than a minute to play in the first-half when she knocked in a free-kick from the edge of the box.
The skilful star secured her hat-trick in the second half, scoring a rare header, assisted by Anne Makinen.
Then, on Friday, the England striker showed her teamwork by setting up two goals in another convincing win over the South Jersey Banshees – this time winning 7-0.
Although she left the match in the second half with a strained groin, Kelly is expected to be fit to play for the Philadelphia Charge in next weekend's WUSA Festival in Blaine, Minnesota.
Team captain Smith now has seven goals and six assists in her opening six games.
She will fly back in August as England take on Russia in a friendly international on Thursday August 19th. The game kicks-off at 7.35pm and the venue will be announced shortly.
Tickets for the game will be on sale from early July and fans can catch Smith and the team on TV with the match being televised live on Sky Sports.
