Several young players will get a chance to pitch for their international future, after Hope Powell named a young squad for the England senior team's annual winter training camp. Powell, the National Women's Coach, has named a squad of 30 to travel to Spain.
From the youth squad that reached the quarter-finals of the inaugural FIFA U19 World Championship in Canada in August 2002 are goalkeeper Toni-Anne Wayne, defenders Leanne Champ and Laura Bassett, as well as midfielder Kelly McDougall and the Arsenal striker Ellen Maggs.
It also includes Charlton Athletic duo Carmaine Walker and Alexa Hunn, who earn their first call-ups to the senior squad.
Popular striker Kelly Smith, of WUSA side Philadelphia Charge, makes her comeback to the squad after missing England's latter World Cup qualifying campaign with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
It will be England's first get-together since they lost to France over two legs in the World Cup Play-off Final in November. The team will have a set of highly competitive friendlies over the course of 2003 as Powell starts her preparations for England's hosting of the 2005 UEFA European Championships.
The squad will meet up on the evening of Sunday 19th January, following their FA Nationwide Premier League and Premier League Cup fixtures, before travelling to Spain the following day.
The players will train until Friday and return to London Gatwick on Saturday, ready to join up with their clubs for The FA Cup Fifth Round or FAWPL matches.
