England winger Sue Smith has made a shock move to Leeds United Ladies. Smith, widely recognised as one of England's hottest talents, was unveiled at a press conference at Elland Road on Tuesday evening.

Smith has just returned to full training after a horror injury in training in January saw her break her right leg, and tear her ankle ligaments as well as dislocating the same ankle. She is hoping to be fit and ready to start in Leeds' first game against Everton when the FA Nationwide Women's Premier League season kicks-off on August 18th.

Smith moved to the club from Tranmere Rovers, where she has played ever since she was a girl. The winger is believed to have received several offers from top flight clubs over the past seasons, but it was Leeds who won her signature. "It was a great achievement for Leeds to finish fourth in their first season in the Premier League and with the great backing from the men's club," said Smith.

"They could better that position in the coming season. Leeds are a club going places and I want to be part of it."

Smith, 22, has clocked up an impressive 39 England caps and scored 11 goals. She has won the FA England International Players' Player Award twice and has also played in the FIFA World XI side.

Delighted Manager Mark Hodgson said: "Sue is a wonderful signing. She is fantastic with the ball at her feet and causes havoc in the opposition's defence. She will score and create lots of goals for Leeds."

David Spencer, Leeds United Operations Director, added: "Sue is a great signing for the Ladies team. Clearly the level of media coverage at the press conference today reflects the quality of the player and congratulations to Mark on his perseverance for tracking down and signing Sue."

Within the last few weeks, Leeds have also signed England goalkeeper Leanne Hall formerly of Doncaster Belles, Claire Wallhead, the England Under-17 goalkeeper formerly of Chesterfield and Chantel Woodhead, a left-back from Everton.
