At the beginning of 2009, Phil Jagielka’s career was on an upward trajectory.

In the summer of 2007 the Sale-born defender moved from Sheffield United to Everton and immediately set about marshalling the Toffees back four, helping David Moyes’ side to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and a subsequent place in the following season’s then UEFA Cup.

His form was rewarded with an England debut that summer when he came off the bench during the 3-0 friendly victory over Trinidad & Tobago and he continued to impress in season 2008-09. Jagielka’s champagne moment came at Wembley in April in The FA Cup Semi-Final as he converted the winning spot-kick which sent the Toffees into their first Cup Final since 1995. However, just six days later, the 27-year-old suffered an horrific injury, rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against Manchester City.

This injury has ruled him out of action ever since and the defender recently admitted he does not know when he will be able to make a comeback.

Before the injury though, Jagielka did manage to add two more caps to his England tally, against Spain and Ukraine. Alongside John Terry in February, he was unable to keep the European Champions at bay as goals from David Villa and Fernando Llorente gave Vicente del Bosque’s side victory in Seville.

Against Ukraine on 1 April, Jagielka replaced Rio Ferdinand in the 88th minute and helped England see out a 2-1 victory which maintained their 100 per cent record in Group Six.
