  • England, Argentina, 1998

France 1998 sees a classic between old rivals.

As usual, the ’98 World Cup in France was a see-saw tournament for England. Group victories over Tunisia and Columbia straddled a last minute loss to Romania, but it was the Three Lions’ Round of 16 match against old foes Argentina that really put fans on the emotional rollercoaster.

Two penalties, a Michael Owen wonder goal, David Beckham’s sending off and a disallowed Sol Campbell goal; no wonder nerves were frayed by the time the penalty shoot-out came around and England were shown the exit.
