The County Durham-born inside-forward enjoyed a successful playing career lasting almost 20 years, but it was as the manager of eight European clubs and the England national team that he created a truly unforgettable legacy.

95 games in charge of the Three Lions saw him lead Gazza and co to the 1990 World Cup semi-final – a feat unequalled by an England manager on foreign soil – and for that he will always have a special place in the hearts of all England fans.
