Neeskens nets in record time.
Finals can be dour affairs. With both teams terrified of making a mistake it can often prompt commentators to moan, “what this game really needs is a goal”.
However, in the 1974 World Cup Final between the Netherlands and West Germany spectators got exactly that, with the Netherlands’ Johan Neeskens slotting home from the penalty spot after just
90 seconds.
It remains the fastest goal in a Final but it didn’t help the Dutch as they went on to lose 2-1, after goals from Paul Breitner and Gerd Muller.
