• Michael Owen, England, 1998, World Cup

89 Days To Go

Sunday, 14 March, 2010

Michael Owen introduces himself to the world.

What a sight it was. Young Michael Owen sprinting from inside the centre circle, brushing off one player, jinking past another and rifling into the top corner to send England 2-1 up in the Round of 16 match against Argentina at the 1998 World Cup. It was, without doubt, one of the goals of the tournament.

Sadly the ecstasy for England fans was a short-lived, but for the 18-year-old Owen it marked the beginning of an outstanding international career.

With 89 caps and 40 goals now under his belt, the Manchester United forward has been an incredible servant for England, and despite recent injuries will no doubt still hanker for an opportunity to contribute to the Three Lions' cause in the future.
