Having previously featured in eight friendly matches, Portsmouth right-back Glen Johnson made his competitive debut for England in September 2008.

The 24-year-old lined up against Andorra in England’s opening World Cup Qualifier where a Joe Cole double gave Fabio Capello’s side all three points.

Johnson combined well with Theo Walcott on the right hand side and their link-up play created a couple of early chances for the Arsenal youngster. Johnson almost opened the scoring himself, but his fierce left-footed effort zipped wide of the post.

The former West Ham United and Chelsea defender also played the full 90 minutes in another two friendlies against Trinidad & Tobago and Germany.

Johnson has recently signed a new contract with Portsmouth and he will look to further stake a claim for a regular place in Capello’s starting eleven in 2009.

Quotes

“There are a couple of Englishmen who have had great seasons at Portsmouth and Glen certainly fits into that category.

"I think Glen should get a crack and he deserves to get another chance. He's getting stronger and learning all the time, especially about the defensive side of the game." Tony Adams

"In my opinion Glen is the best right-back in the country.” Peter Storrie
