Contenders: Crouch

Saturday, 03 January, 2009

Peter Crouch made six appearances for England in 2008, all coming from the bench.

During 2008, Fabio Capello awarded caps to 35 players in ten games as England won eight, drew one and lost one. Today we look at Peter Crouch, who made six appearances for The Three Lions in 2008.

Despite not scoring in his six appearances in 2008, Peter Crouch is still close to a goal every two games for England.

All of Crouch’s caps under Fabio Capello have come from the bench in a year that saw him switch clubs from Liverpool to FA Cup winners Portsmouth where he has linked up with fellow England forward Jermain Defoe.

Now with 30 caps for The Three Lions since his debut against Colombia in May 2005, the striker was unlucky not to add to his impressive tally of 14 goals during the friendly away in Trinidad in June.

After coming on as a half-time substitute, Crouch came close on three occasions but was twice thwarted by ‘keeper Clayton Ince, while Dennis Lawrence also did well snuffing out a late opportunity that would have made it 4-0 to England.
