Virtually an ever-present for Manchester United last season, Wes Brown’s performances earned him a consistent spell at the right-back berth for his country, where he continued to impress.
Brown began at full-back in Fabio Capello’s first match as England Manager and the Italian called on Brown’s services a further six times throughout the year.
2008 also saw Brown score his first international goal. With England trailing to a Milan Baros goal against Czech Republic in an August friendly, Brown climbed above Tomaš Ujfalusi to head home an equaliser just before half-time.
The 29-year-old also played the full 90 minutes away to Croatia in England’s 4-1 victory and his last international was the 3-1 win in Belarus. An ankle operation has kept him out of the Manchester United first-team recently, but he hopes to back in the New Year to regain his place both with the Red Devils and The Three Lions.
Quotes
"It's been good being involved with England. I've been in and out of the squad for the last ten years, but to be involved under the new boss is brilliant.
"It'll be a battle for me again this season to keep my place in the team at United, but hopefully I can keep playing well and keep my place with England as well. All I can do is try my hardest, but the most important thing is that the team plays well and we qualify for the World Cup." Wes Brown
