Steve McClaren has identified Sol Campbell as the perfect candidate to replace his injured Three Lions captain John Terry. The Chelsea defender is out of Saturday's European Championship qualifier with Estonia and is a doubt for Wednesday's potentially decisive meeting with Russia.

Campbell has not featured for his country since appearing as a second half substitute in England's 2-2 draw with Sweden in last summer's World Cup. McClaren, however, has total confidence in the defender who has been a key figure in Portsmouth's impressive start to the Premier League season.

He said: "To be able to call on someone with that experience and that quality, that is tremendous.

"His reaction has been excellent, as expected."

The England Head Coach also indicated that it will take another couple of days before he is able to confirm whether Terry will be fit enough to take part in the Moscow match.

He added: "His knee settled down on Friday and we'll hope it settles down further in the next two days. We'll make a decision on Monday."
