Martyn Waghorn said his Under-21s debut was a 'brilliant' day which was capped off by his thunderbolt strike in England's 6-0 win over Azerbaijan.
And it was the perfect start to the Three Lions' new European Qualification campaign as West Brom's Craig Dawson and West Ham United loanee Henri Lansbury both scored braces, and Liverpool's Jordan Henderson also hit the target to make it a comfortable three points for Stuart Pearce's men.
But Waghorn, who just 24 hours earlier had sealed a loan move from Leicester City to Hull City, smashed home the fifth goal on the night with a powerful 30-yard strike with his left foot just moments after coming off the bench.
"I'm very pleased," Waghorn told FATV. "It was nice to get some minutes on the pitch and to cap it with a goal.
"It [left foot] is all right, when it gets going. Sometimes they can fly anywhere but it was nice to get it one on target, get a goal and a victory.
"It was a great moment. I've played before when I was younger for the 18s and 19s but to get a call-up to the Under-21s and get on is fantastic. I'm always proud to play for my country, so it's a brilliant day."
He added: "We got off to a great start with Dawson's header, he's been on fire in training, he's a big boy and will put his head on this. We've got a good group of lads, with a mixture of experience and younger lads so it's good."
