England's World Cup 'keeper David James poked his head in at Ashton Gate on Monday morning as the Under-21s took part in their first training session of the new season.
James joined Championship side Bristol City just ten days ago, and on Tuesday night his club will host England's Young Lions as they take on Uzbekistan. The match is part of Stuart Pearce's preparations for next month's two must-win Euro 2011 qualifiers against Portugal and Lithuania.
Taking part in the session were 12 of Pearce's 18-man squad, including new faces Jordan Henderson of Sunderland, Liverpool's Martin Kelly and Aston Villa's Marc Albrighton. While those players trained in the sunshine of Bristol, the remaining members of the squad stayed at the hotel for a recovery session following action with their clubs at the weekend.
Meanwhile, two players who came on as second-half subsitutes in The FA Community Shield at Wembley were involved in the session at Ashton Gate. Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge looked sharp following an impressive display on Sunday, despite his team's 3-1 defeat. United's summer recruit Chris Smalling was also out on the field after picking up a piece of silverware in his first competitive match for his new club.
Smalling, who joined from Fulham, also had chance to speak exclusively to FATV after training about life at United and what his hopes are with England this season, and you can watch that here on Tuesday.
