Man Utd midfielder given boost by Sir Alex ahead of international.
England Under-21s and Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has received the backing of manager Sir Alex Ferguson, after the Old Trafford boss refused to send the 20-year-old out on loan again this season despite significant interest from several Premier League rivals.
Cleverley broke into Stuart Pearce’s Young Lions team in September last year, while on loan at Championship side Watford. Making his debut in the European Championship Qualifier away to Macedonia, he produced a performance that has seen him become a regular fixture in the Under-21s set-up.
He continued with the Hornets until the end of the 2009/10 season, playing 33 games and scoring an impressive 11 goals before returning to United and being heavily involved in their pre-season tour to the US.
Having scored a terrific goal against the MLS All-Stars in Houston he has now received a significant boost from the United manager.
“He is an exceptional young player in terms of his ability to play a variety of positions,” Sir Alex told ManUtd.com. “He is such a talent, we must keep him.
“He showed at Watford that he’s a goalscorer from midfield and we need that. He has outstanding qualities.”
Prior to the start of the Premier League season, however, Cleverley has the opportunity to impress on the international stage once more, as the Under-21s take on Uzbekistan at Ashton Gate on Tuesday.
