Sky Blues midfielder Cork looking for England chance at Ricoh Arena

When the England Under-21s arrive at the Ricoh Arena for their first home game of the season against Macedonia on Friday night, one person who will feel more at home than others will be Jack Cork.

The 20-year-old midfielder is currently on loan at Coventry City from Chelsea and is once again part of Stuart Pearce’s squad. After watching from the bench during the last two matches in Macedonia and Greece, Cork now hopes to see some action in front of his home support.

“I got called up for the last game on standby. It was a bit of a surprise, I was preparing for the two-week international break and I had two or three missed calls and messages on my mobile saying I had been called up to the squad and they needed me to fly out to Macedonia – I was pretty excited,” said Cork.

“It would be great to be involved again at the Ricoh, I was only called up on standby last time so I wasn’t expecting to play but, because it is England, it is fantastic just to be involved.

“Hopefully I made an impression in training and off the pitch. I’m one of only about three players who have been in the England squads since U16s level and it gets harder the further you go up – there is a lot more responsibility on the players.”

And Cork has enjoyed the week back with the England set-up as they gear up for Friday’s UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier.

“Some of the Coventry City lads came to watch us training on Tuesday and we got a bit of banter from the sidelines, but it was all in good spirit,” he said.

“But now we’re all really looking forward to the match and I am really hoping I will get a chance to play at the Ricoh in front of a load of Coventry City fans.”

Tickets for the game are on sale through the Coventry City box office priced at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions. Call 0871 220 0260 or buy online at www.seetickets.com alternatively watch the match live on TheFA.com
