DIARY: Henri Lansbury relaxes after helping England claim a point against Spain.
The day after the match is always quite a relaxing one. While the boys who started last night did a light recovery session in the pool with Boydy (Fitness Coach Craig Boyd) and had massages in the medical room, those like me who were on the bench went training at Fredericia.
It was a good result for us in the end against Spain. They were very good with the ball, certainly to watch, but when I came on I realised just how well they passed the ball. We worked hard and did a lot of running to keep them from getting in behind us and they did most of their playing in front of our defence.
We probably had as many chances as they did and we feel that after getting the equaliser we could have gone on to score again if we’d had enough time. But we’re happy with the point and will now move on to the next game against Ukraine on Wednesday.
The build-up to the game was unusual as it was quite a long day with it being a late kick-off at 8.45pm over here. We all had a walk in the morning down to the Marina near the hotel and Boydy went the wrong way, not once but twice, and we ended up in someone’s garden. When we got down to the waterfront there were loads of jellyfish in there. Not something I see that often.
We went straight into the team meeting when we got back and were told the starting eleven. It’s always disappointing not to start and I thought that I could have had a chance after my last game against Norway when I thought I had played pretty well. But I’m always supportive of those who do get the nod.
In the afternoon we had our rest time and I was just watching episodes of Family Guy on my ipad in my room.
The coach ride up to Herning for the game took over an hour and it started badly for me when I cut my finger on my razor when I put my hand into my washbag. We had to get the coach to stop so the Doc could get a plaster from his bag underneath to stop it from bleeding.
I had my earphones on to listen to Rihanna – I’m a big fan so if she’s reading this please get in contact – and also watched some more Family Guy. I was impressed by the stadium when we arrived, and am looking forward to going back on Wednesday.
Though I didn’t start, I was pleased to get on and hoped I could have made an impact from the bench. It was hard game though and their midfield reminded me of Arsenal, they passed for fun. After the match I swapped shirts with Thiago, he’s very good but did most of his playing in front of our defence. Frankie didn’t have many shots to deal with but when he was called upon he made a great reflex stop.
The result made for a much better journey back to the hotel. I had my protein shake and felt like I was still running. I also had a chat with Welbs and Hendo. It was good to get back and after a post-match meal of prawns, fish and rice I went to my room and watched Role Models while I was in bed.
This afternoon, following training, I went over to the nearby golf club on the buggy with Frosty the Kitman to watch Frankie do his media work. Frankie told the press a very touching story about growing up and also when he joined up with the England senior team last year and had all the journalists laughing. I’ll look out for the articles online later this week.
It's raining now here, and has been cloudy all afternoon. Hopefully we'll get the sun back soon...
I'll be back here on Thursday, so until then,
Henri
