Liverpool midfielder is looking to hit the mark when England face Sweden on Tuesday

Jonjo Shelvey wants to mark his return to the England Under-21s fold with a goal against Sweden on Tuesday night.

Shelvey’s last outing for Stuart Pearce’s side was in their final group qualifier with Norway in September.

A call-up to Roy Hodgson’s squad then saw the Liverpool midfielder make his senior debut against San Marino in October before injury forced him out of November’s games.

Now he’s back at St. George’s Park and looking forward to facing the Swedes in Walsall as the Young Lions build towards the Euro 2013 Finals in June.

“I felt good today. It was nice to get back to St. George’s Park and get back training again," Shelvey told TheFA.com. 

"I've not played so much for Liverpool so I'd like to get some minutes under my belt.

"That's up to the gaffer here to pick me. Fingers crossed he does, and hopefully I get get a goal as well."



After Liverpool's Premier League game at Manchester City on Sunday, Shelvey arrived at St. George's Park towards the end of the inaugural FA England Awards.

Two of his team mates, Jordan Henderson and Steven Gerrard, were soon celebrating after both picking up prizes. Henderson scooped the Under-21s Player of the Year while Gerrard took the Seniors version, which were both voted for by England fans. 

“Me, Jordan and Andre got there towards the end, but it was good to see so many famous people. The senior coach was here too so it was good to say hello and it puts you in their minds.

“I’m happy for Jordan and for Steven. Jordan deserved it for his performances for the Under-21s all year, he’s been superb."

This trip is Shelvey's third time training at the national football centre in Burton upon Trent. The Under-21s were there in September, then he was with Hodgson's men for the official opening in October.

This week has seen the complex in full flow, with the seniors, Under-21s and U19s all training side by side on Monday. And Shelvey reckons the club spirit it can foster can help the younger players push on.

"It was good to see the U19s here as well as it makes them feel that extra bit special and feel closer to the seniors," he said. "Everyone is around one another.”

“They need a more day to day club feel and I think with this place they are going to get that. The facilities and the hotel are superb so it’s just a pleasure to come here and train."
