England Under-21s midfielder nets brace as Liverpool win in Europe.

After a match-winning double for Liverpool in Europe on Thursday night, Jonjo Shelvey has been praised as 'outstanding' by Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.

The England Under-21s midfielder, who scored for Stuart Pearce's men in Azerbaijan earlier this month, arrived from the bench in Bern to smash home a late brace and hand Liverpool an important Europa League victory over Young Boys.

Rodgers is predicting a bright future for the former Charlton Athletic man, who has featured heavily in his Anfield revolution this season.

"He has been outstanding," Rodgers said.

"He is still only 20 years of age and is developing and growing all the time and you saw his confidence when he came on.

"His (first) goal, we worked it very well and he did what he can do very well and I think he will be a big player for Liverpool."

The Romford-born youngster has played six times for Liverpool this campaign and came on in Bern as his side drew level at 3-3.

And it proved to be a master-stroke by the manager as they ran out 5-3 victors.

"I felt it was the time of the game we needed him really," Rodgers added.

"It worked well for us because once we got the equaliser they went to more 4-4-2, it gave us the extra man in midfield and we were able to dominate that bit more." 

20-year-old Shelvey is now targeting a starting place when the Reds welcome Manchester United to Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

"I hope I've played my way into the side for Sunday," he told the Liverpool website. "I don't know what the manager is thinking regarding that game but since he came in he has been first class with me.

"He has given me opportunities and hopefully by coming off the bench and scoring two goals tonight I repaid him.

"Games don't get any bigger than playing for Liverpool against Man United. It's what dreams are made of.

"The atmosphere at Anfield will be electric and I want to be a part of that."
