FATV caught up with Fabrice Muamba at the Under-21s Euro 2013 play-off with Serbia

Two years ago, Fabrice Muamba was an instrumental figure as England Under-21s qualified for the Euro 2011 Finals.

In the two legged-play off against Romania, the Bolton midfielder helped Stuart Pearce's team to a 2-1 first leg victory in Norwich and a 0-0 draw in the away game, which sealed their path to Denmark.

A veteran of the team having already won high praise for his performances in the 2009 tournament in Sweden, Muamba's 33-game Under-21s career came to an end as the Three Lions were eliminated in the group stage in Denmark following defeat to Czech Republic.

While Pearce's new crop have been working towards qualification for a fourth tournament in succession, Muamba has been fighting his own more serious battle after suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch in an FA Cup tie at Tottenham in March.

The 24-year-old made a remarkable recovery after spending nearly a month in hospital but was unfortunately forced to retire from the game in August.

But on Friday back at Carrow Road, he returned to the Under-21s dressing room for the first time in 18 months as England beat Serbia 1-0. Working as a pundit for broadcaster ESPN, Muamba caught up with FATV after the game.

"It's great to be back to see the guys, it's been a long time since I've been in the set-up," said Muamba. "I feel great, I'm in a good shape and I am glad to watch the game today as well."

Muamba is confident that England can now go on to finish the job off in the second leg on Tuesday in Krusevac.

"I think 1-0 was a fair result because we created chances and they created chances as well. But the best team won tonight and hopefully we can pick up for the next leg when we go over there and get a result."

He added: "We don't have to go over there and win, as long as we defend and keep a clean sheet we're in the stronger position right now."
