Stuart Pearce's men begin the road to reach the 2013 UEFA European Championship with their first Group 8 encounter against Azerbaijan at Vicarage Road on Thursday 1 September.
Azerbaijan became new opponents for England’s Senior and Under-21 teams with two matches in Baku in 2004. Peter Taylor’s Under-21s drew 0-0 and on the following day a Michael Owen header was enough to give Sven’s England victory.
The Under-21s 100% record in Qualifying for the 2006 UEFA Championship ended with that 0-0 stalemate in the Ismet Gayibov Stadium and in the return five months later Taylor’s side beat the Azeris 2-0 at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium.
Most recently, more than 12,000 fans at Milton Keynes Dons’ new ground saw England’s meeting with Azerbaijan in 2009. Stuart Pearce’s England signed off before their trip to Sweden for the UEFA Finals with a confidence-boosting 7-0 win.
Four days after next month's England v Azerbaijan fixture, the Three Lions will be in Barnsley for a friendly with the hosts of the 2013 Finals, Israel.
Our only previous match with Israel at Under-21 level was a friendly played at Tel Aviv’s Ramat-Gan Stadium on a February afternoon in 1985. Goals by Ipswich Town defender Ian Cranson and Aston Villa striker Paul Rideout gave Dave Sexton's team a 2-1 victory.
England were the only nation to have reached the last three European Championship Finals, but saw their hopes in Denmark this summer end in the group stages.
Of those that were involved in June, England fans can expect to see the likes of Manchester United's
Phil Jones and
Danny Welbeck, Tottenham's
Kyle Walker and
Danny Rose, as well as
Jack Rodwell,
Jordan Henderson,
Henri Lansbury,
Nathan Delfouneso and
Connor Wickham, all of whom are eligible to play for the Under-21s in this campaign.
Players born on or after 1 January 1990 are all eligible to play in this qualifying period, and any subsequent Finals appearance.
