England Under-21 Head Coach Stuart Pearce
today named his provisional 40-man squad for this summer’s 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Denmark.
In a strong group, six of the 40 have all previously appeared for the England senior team; Andy Carroll, Danny Welbeck, Jack Wilshere, Jordan Henderson, Micah Richards and Kieran Gibbs.
Four goalkeepers are joined by 12 defenders in the initial group, which will be whittled down to the final 23 by 1 June.
Gibbs and Richards are joined by Manchester United’s Chris Smalling and Aston Villa’s loan-man Kyle Walker, both of whom have trained with the England senior squad.
Chelsea starlet Josh McEachran is amongst a group of 15 midfielders named by Pearce, as are Under-21 regulars Jack Rodwell and Danny Rose and Fabrice Muamba.
Nine front man are vying for a pick in the final squad, led by Liverpool man Carroll, Sunderland’s Welbeck and Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge, who is currently on loan at Bolton Wanderers.
The England Under-21 squad head to Denmark on 8 June to continue their preparations for what is an intense two week tournament featuring the very best of Europe’s young talent.
Having finished runners-up in 2009, Pearce has named a strong squad in the hope of going one better this time around. England are also currently ranked number one in the UEFA European rankings, whilst they find themselves the only side of the eight qualifying nations to have made it to their third consecutive Finals.
England start their campaign with a tricky fixture against Spain (12 June) before taking on Ukraine (15 June) and Czech Republic (19 June).
Prior to flying to Denmark, England will take on fellow finalists Norway
in a Championship warm-up fixture at Southampton’s St. Mary’s Stadium on 5 June (kick-off 3pm).
Tickets for this fixture are available from £10 for adults and £5 for children. Calling 0800 2800 050
