England's Under-21s have had their preparations hampered by three withdrawals from their squad ahead of key 2011 European Championship qualifiers with Portugal and Lithuania.

Everton's Jack Rodwell has returned to Everton with an ankle injury, picked up in his club side's fixture against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Meanwhile Newcastle United's Andy Carroll is also ruled out of the squad due to an ongoing ankle complaint, whilst Henri Lansbury has also returned to his club, Arsenal, with a slight groin injury.

The Young Lions trained for a second day at their London Colney training base and will fly out to Portugal on Wednesday before Friday evening's match with the Portuguese in Barcelos.

Stuart Pearce has also called up Middlesbrough 'keeper Jason Steele following a short-term injury to Alex Smithies.

Smithies, who picked up a dead leg for Huddersfield in their recent game with Everton in the League Cup, will return to his club for further treatment ahead of the weekend's domestic fixtures. His fitness will be monitored over the weekend with the possibility of him rejoining the squad ahead of Tuesday's trip to Colchester to face Lithuania.

In the meantime, Steele will join the Young Lions for their trip to Portugal, as well as the home fixture with Lithuania next week.

Pearce's players looked sharp on the training field under bright blue skies and picked up no fresh injuries at the Hertfordshire venue, where they were joined by a team of Watford FC's Academy Scholars in a practice match.
