England Under-21s make their return to Wembley on Friday evening, when they face Portugal in their final qualifying game for the European Championships.

Stuart Pearce's team were the first England representative side to play at Wembley after its redevelopment in March 2007 when Italy were the visitors for a friendly game.

It turned out to be quite a spectacle too, with the teams sharing a 3-3 draw in front of a crowd of 55,700 supporters.

The action was frenetic right from the off and the Azzurini took the lead after only 29 seconds when Gianpaolo Pazzini struck a fine shot home to give a sign of what was to come.

England's first goal at the new look stadium arrived in the 30th minute, when David Bentley netted with a fine free kick.

The Three Lions then edged ahead through Wayne Routledge after good work involving substitute Matt Derbyshire early in the second half.

Pazzini's second of the game brought Italy back level just a minute later before Derbyshire restored the advantage and became the second Blackburn Rovers player to score in the game following on from Bentley, who was also plying his trade at Ewood Park at the time.

On what was already proving to be a memorable occasion at Wembley, Fiorentina striker Pazzini made it a day to remember for himself as he completed his treble in the 68th minute and became the first player to notch a hat-trick in the new stadium.

It was an incredible game and a fitting way to open the new Wembley, a match which everyone in the ground will remember the day they saw Wembley reborn.
