The Football Association has announced that Deepdale and Spotland will be match venues when England hosts the U19 Elite Qualifying Round for this year’s UEFA European Championship in May.
Preston North End will host England’s games against Slovenia (25 May) and Switzerland (30 May) with the Young Lions’ fixture against Montenegro (27 May) sandwiched in-between at Rochdale.
Only the group winners qualify for this summer’s UEFA European Championship in Estonia and U19s Head Coach, Noel Blake, is determined to lead England to the tournament after they were edged out on goal difference by Spain at the same stage last year.
“We drew with Spain 1-1 in the Elite Round last year and they went onto the European Championship instead of us on goal difference, where they beat Czech Republic 3-2 in the final," said Blake.
“The Elite Qualifying Round is intense as you’re playing three very good teams inside a week.
“Switzerland has really emerged at youth level in recent years and won the U17 World Cup in 2009 so that could be a big game at Deepdale on 30 May.
“As we found out last year, it’s a fine line between qualifying for the tournament and staying home all summer, so we’ve got to remain organised and focused on the job in hand.”
Last week saw England U19s warm-up for the Elite Round with a 2-1 win over Czech Republic at Leyton Orient, thanks to goals from Millwall’s Harry Kane (on loan from Spurs) and Chelsea striker Pat Bamford.
Eight of last week’s starting XI were part of England’s U17 European Championship winning team from 2010 and Blake was pleased with their shift across the 90 minutes at Brisbane Road: “It was a good performance and some of movement was very sharp, especially in the first half.
“Czech Republic scored towards the end and that brought them back into the game so it was good to see how we coped under pressure late on.
“It was a good exercise for us because, from a coaching point of view, you want to see how the squad reacts in different match situations. Our young players can take that experience to the Elite Round tournament in May.”
Tickets will be priced at just £3 adults and £1 concessions (U16 and OAPS) while local Charter Standard clubs are entitled to 25 free tickets for all matches at Deepdale via firstname.lastname@example.org and Spotland through email@example.com
