Young Lions skipper Conor Coady celebrated his return to the international scene on Tuesday by leading the U18s to a convincing victory against Poland at Adams Park.
The Liverpool midfielder’s last outing in an England shirt came in Liechtenstein last May when he held the European U17 Championship trophy aloft following victory over Spain in the Final, so he was overjoyed to lead out the Lions back on home soil.
“I’m made up with it,” he said. “I’m absolutely buzzing. I was really made up when I led the team out, I was really happy with the performance too.
“I think we showed the coaching staff that we can do it and I thought we played really well.”
Coady was joined in the line-up by three other members of that successful U17 squad whilst there were a few new faces in Noel Blake’s squad with two debutants even getting on the scoresheet in defender George Taft and midfielder Jordan Obita .
“There was two debut goals in there too, so those lads have shown they can score goals and they all played really well," he added.
“We had a lot of new players in the side tonight, but we all gelled together and it was the right result for us.
“The next step is up to the U19s, so that’s our aim.”
