England U18s rounded their season off with a narrow defeat on Tuesday evening, as a second-half goal from sub Gilles Sallaets secured victory for Belgium.

After a tight first half of few chances, Noel Blake's side were undone by the KV Mechelen striker's goal in the 69th minute and just couldn't find a way back into the match.

The Young Lions, who were hit by numerous withdrawals from the squad in the build-up to the trip, were perhaps unfortunate not to come away from La Louviere with a draw after a largely equal game.

And the winner came just moments after Blake had made a number of substitutions, in order to give all 18 players in his squad a chance to impress.

But with the U18s age group serving a useful purpose for Blake in order to assess his options for next season's U19 squad, both the Coach and the players will return to England much the wiser.

England U18s: 1 Cameron Dawson (13 Luke Coddington 60), 2 Liam Grimshaw (12 Tareiq Holmes-Dennis, 60) 3 Harry Toffolo (15 Dominic Iorfa, 46), 4 Ben Pearson(C), 5 Josh Webb, 6 Jake Cooper (16 Jerome Williams, 46), 7 James Weir (18 Tariqe Fosu-Henry, 68), 8 Jesse Starkey (14 Aaron Tshibola, 60), 9 Tobi Sho-Silva, 10 Christopher Long, 11 Jordan Ibe (17 Joseph Dadoo, 60).
