Six players who helped guide England to European glory in May have been called into Noel Blake’s U18 squad for the friendly against Poland next month.

Conor Coady, who captained the side, Saido Berahino, Luke Garbutt, Rob Hall, George Thorne and Tom Thorpe all played their part in Liechtenstein as the Young Lions lifted the UEFA European U17 Championship trophy for the first ever time.

Thorne flew to Belgium earlier this month for the U19s’ European Championship qualifiers but the Poland match will be the sextet’s first England game back on home soil since that triumphant May day in Vaduz.

In total, 13 of Blake’s 18-man squad have played for an England youth team in the past, at either U16 or U17 level, but there are maiden call-ups for Jordan Obita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Matthew Pearson, Jackson Ramm and George Taft.

Chuks Aneke, who withdrew injured from the U17 Euros, is back in the international fold, as is Manchester United midfielder Ravel Morrison, who came off the bench against Wolves in the League Cup on Tuesday.

“The fact that six of these players took part in the U17 Euros means they come with good experience,” said Blake, upon announcing the squad.

“Equally, there are a few new faces as you would expect, and it gives me, my assistant manager Kenny Swain and goalkeeping coach Simon Smith a great opportunity to assess their progress at this level.

“The players involved can certainly try to impress and catch the eye to challenge for places in the U19s squad for next year’s Elite Qualifying Round for the European Championship.”
