Chuba Akpom goal not enough against Iceland.
England slipped to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Iceland in their final group match of this season’s Nordic Tournament.
The Young Lions came into this game on four points following a 4-0 defeat of Faroe Islands on Tuesday and a 1-1 draw with Norway on Wednesday.
Head Coach Kenny Swain had predicted an altogether different encounter against the host nation and so it transpired. The teams went in goalless at the break, but two goals in as many minutes put the Iceland in a commanding position.
þorour Jon Johannesson opened the scoring after 46 minutes and Stefan þor Palsson doubled the lead on 48.
Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom, who scored in the 4-0 win over Faroe Islands and has today been named in the squad for The FA International Tournament at the end of the month, halved the deficit shortly after coming on as a substitute but, ultimately, it was to no avail, as the hosts held on for all three points.
England have one final game in this tournament on Sunday against either Sweden, Denmark, Finland or a second Iceland team, depending on final group standings.
