John Peacock has named his England U17 squad for the St. George’s Park International Tournament which gets under way at the end of August.

His young side will entertain Portugal, Italy and Turkey in this annual early season competition.

All 18 players have had previous experience of international football, having been part of Kenny Swain’s U16 squad last season, while Callum Jones and Connor Ogilvie are on U17 duty at the moment, at the Nordic Tournament.

Angus Gunn, Ashley Smith-Brown, Max Clark and Mason Bennett will bring a season’s worth of U17 experience to the squad, having all appeared at this age level last year, and Peacock is looking forward to pitting his new crop of players against some of the best on the Continent.

“The likes of Portugal, Turkey and Italy will give us a very good benchmark as to our current standing in Europe,” he explained. “That said, this is a friendly tournament that will give all four teams a good chance to gauge the quality and depth of their squads.

“Our short term objective is to give all players an equal chance to show what they can do in this tournament,” continued the Head Coach.

“But our prime objective for this season is to once again qualify for the European U17 Championship Finals next May. We have an excellent track record in that competition over the last ten years, the highlight being winning it in Liechtenstein in 2010.

“All four teams will be working towards the Euros and having the chance to spend nine days training and playing in testing matches will be a big help, and a key reason why we always like to hold this tournament.”

This will be the 14th edition of this tournament and it has provided a platform for the likes Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott and Daniel Sturridge to showcase their talent at an early age.
