England U17s will kick-off the new football season with an international friendly tournament against Italy, Czech Republic and Portugal next month.

It’s a quick return to action for the England U17 age group, who have been busy in both European Championship and World Cup action this summer.

Managed by Head Coach John Peacock and assisted by former Aston Villa European Cup winner, Kenny Swain, the team reached the Semi-Finals of the Euros in Serbia and narrowly missed out on a place in the last four at the World Cup in Mexico last week when they were beaten 3-2 by Germany.

The August friendlies will also signal a new era for the U17s with the latest batch of youngsters coming through as last season’s squad look to continue their development path with both the England U18 and U19 age groups.

England kick-off against Italy at Cambridge United on 24 August, then head to Bishop’s Stortford FC to face Czech Republic on August 26 before concluding the mini-tournament against Portugal at Northampton Town on 28 August.

“Our U16s won the annual Home Nations tournament against Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland last season so we’ll be looking at some of those youngsters for the friendly games next month,” said Peacock, who led England to the U17 European Championship title against Spain in 2010.

“The likes of Italy, Czech Republic and Portugal will bring something a little different to each game and all three nations have a good pedigree when it comes to youth development so we’re looking at a decent test for our new U17s.

“We begin European Championship qualification for 2012 in the autumn as well, so these games will be a good experience for the squad ahead of the new campaign.”
