England get their defence of the European U17 Championship underway in mid-October when they travel east to Georgia for the First Qualifying Round of the 2010-11 competition.

It was back in May when John Peacock's Young Lions lifted the title in Liechtenstein following victory over Spain, but that is no guarantee of qualification for this season's tournament and they will have to overcome opposition from their hosts in Tblisi as well as Poland and Sweden if they are to progress to the second stage, next year's Elite Qualifying Round.

Their first game is against Sweden on Monday 18 October, before they take on Georgia two days later and then round off the four team tournament by facing Poland on Saturday 23 October. The top two ranked teams from this group will then enter the draw for the Elite Round.

Peacock has named an 18-man squad for the trip and all of them have previous international experience having been involved at U16 level or in the Nationwide U17 Tournament earlier this year when they saw off opposition from Turkey, Australia and Portugal to win that competition.

Nat Chalobah is the one player in the squad who was part of last season's success in Liechtenstein, so he will be hopeful of leading the new batch to similar levels again.

What Do You Think?

  • Mr Peacock / FA, I really hope you know about Eric Dier. He is in Sporting Lisbon's academy and has been captain of every junior Sporting side, apart from the Under 19s since he was 11 and he signed a professional contract in April. He is known to be one of the best talents in their academy and has already turned down Portugal U17s because he wants to play for England at youth level. He has even rejected to transfer to Man United, Arsenal and Tottenham this summer. Please call him up, give him a chance and let him know that England wants him because he has recently said that he won't wait much longer. He understands that it is hard to track someone as young as him in Portugal at youth level, but he is an exceptional talent. Being at Sporting he will have already have had 3-4 times the amount of training time too. Not many English centre backs at this level can boast that.By Jaffe (30 months ago)
