It was a night to remember for the England U17s on Monday, but for one player in particular it will live long in the memory for more than most.
Striker Harry Kane only played his first games for the Young Lions after a call-up for the Algarve Tournament in February, but he made such a big impression there that he was swiftly picked again by John Peacock for the Elite Round Qualifiers.
Kane then played an important role in the 5-0 victory over Malta on Monday, culminating in his first goal for England, from the penalty spot, in the second half.
"I'm absolutely delighted,” he told TheFA.com after the game.
"To get your first goal for England is special and after I'd won the penalty, I wouldn't let anyone take it off me.
"It's been a good experience for me, I've never done anything like this before, so hopefully we can just qualify and get through to the Finals.”
The victory means England have one foot in May’s European U17 Championship Finals, which are being held in Liechtenstein, and the Tottenham Hotspur player is determined to play a key role against Slovakia on Thursday, where England know a draw will be enough to see them qualify.
"At this moment in time, we should qualify, but we just need to do the job and get through,” added 16-year-old Kane.
"I want to start now, like I want to start every game, but that's down to the Manager.”
