A sublime fifth minute chip from Chelsea's Billy Knott got England off to a winning start in the Nordic Tournament, with a 1-0 victory over Finland in the stifling heat of Sweden.

Knott collected a misplaced pass 35 yards from goal and with the Finnish 'keeper, Walter Viitala, stranded he lofted the ball into an empty net.

The humid conditions made for a game of relatively few chances, with the Young Lions creating only a couple of clear cut opportunities throughout. Shortly after England went ahead, Luke Freeman had a shot saved by Viitala, but with an eye on tomorrow's second group game, ten second-half substitutes ultimately meant neither side could take complete control.

Goalkeeper Ryan Allsop made two smart saves on his England debut to ensure Kenny Swain's side claimed all three points.

England's second group match is against Iceland tomorrow, with Norway providing the opposition on Thursday.
