England U16s got off to a good start in The Montaigu Tournament in France on Wednesday, when they picked up a solid victory against Japan.

A penalty from Everton's José Baxter early in the second half set the Young Lions on their way before Manchester United defender Ezekiel Fryers, who also scored in the team's last outing against Holland, netted a second shortly after that.

The scoring was completed when Arsenal midfielder Luke Freeman added a third goal just past the hour mark.

Noel Blake is in charge of the squad for this competition and they will be back in action on Thursday when they face Germany in their second game of the tournament at the same venue.

England: Adam Davies, Ezekiel Fryers, Emmanuel Frimpong, Oliver Nicholas, Angus Macdonald, Jonjo Shelvey (Jacob Walcott, 80), Ryan Tunnicliffe, Luke Freeman (Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, 69), José Baxter (Liam Head, 72), Josh McEachran, Sam Byles (Keanu Marsh-Brown, 72).

Goals: Baxter 41 (pen), Fryers 48, Freeman 63
