England U16 are crowned 2009 champions following victory over Germany.

England U16s successfully defended their title as champions of the Montaigu Tournament, beating Germany on kicks from the penalty spot in the competition's Final in western France on Monday afternoon.

Kenny Swain's team, who beat hosts France in the Final of 2008, had been held to a draw during the 80 minutes but held their composure and nerve to win the game, courtesy of successful spot kicks from William Keane and Nathaniel Chalobah.

It had looked as though England may have had to settle for second place though, as they missed their first two penalties whilst Germany edged ahead.

Keane and Chalobah scored with England's third and fourth penalties to restore the advantage and that proved to be enough as Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland saved two of the German efforts and sealed England's honour as the winners of the Montaigu Tournament 2009.

England secured their place in the Final after victories against Russia, United Arab Emirates and Ivory Coast in Group B, whilst Germany emerged from Group A which contained France, Australia and Mali.

It is the second competition that the U16s have won this season, following success in the Victory Shield last last year.
