Partially Sighted Team draw 0-0 with Ukraine at Euro Championship

England met Ukraine in the first of their two group games at the European Championship in Kayseri in Turkey and the match ended in a goalless draw.

The game was a tactical battle as both teams tried to move their opponents out of position to gain an attacking advantage. England had a greater percentage of possession in the first half, keeping the ball well and making creative runs lead by the captain Steve Daley. This inspired the new and youngest squad member, Tom Lamb, who tried to penetrate the defence on a couple of occasions with his attacking pace.

England came out brightly in the second half and were looking to take charge of the game. There was some fluid movement and in the eigth minute of the second period John McDougall turned the last man following a lovely through ball from Jeremy Vernaeve, but just pulled his shot wide.

Ukraine were feeling the pressure and came at England in the next five minutes but thanks to the safe hands of Brendan Dix, Ukraine were unable to break through the strong England team.

With five minutes to go England thought they had taken the lead, when Jeremy Vernaeve’s tricky feet again allowed him some space to shoot. He beat the keeper but was denied a well-deserved goal by the post.

A courageous performance but unfortunately England had to settle for the draw.

Keeley's men now play Italy on Wednesday 6 June and must win this game to be assured a place in the semi-final to be held on Friday 8 June.

Team: 1 Dix, 2 Bricknell, 3 Pugh, 4 D Gauden, 5 Vernaeve, 6 Lamb, 7 Daley, 10 McDougall, 13 Bailey.
